This week in squeeze: June 14 – June 20

It was an eventful week for San Diego with two squeeze attempts. Against the Giants in extra innings, they called on starting pitcher Andrew Cashner to pinch hit, and he dropped down a beauty to take the lead. A couple days later against the Giants, they tried to tack on run late but instead got some first hand evidence that Adrian Gonzalez is awesome defensively.

Alcides Escobar Safety Squeeze Fail

Game: Kansas City at Chicago White Sox, August 6 (box, 4-2 White Sox win)
Situation: Top 8, one out, 1-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, game tied 2-2
Pitcher: Chris Sale
Batter: Alcides Escobar
Runner on 3rd: Tony Abreu

Leverage index: 4.2
Win probability added: -16.2%

Chris Sale defines ‘gazelle off the mound’ making an absolutely huge play in a tie game in the 8th inning.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): -1 (-1, fail)

Denard Span Safety Squeeze

Game: Kansas City at Minnesota, July 1, (box, 10-8 Twins win)
Situation: Bottom 6, zero out, 1-0 count, runner at 3rd, Minnesota down 5-1
Pitcher: Bruce Chen
Batter: Denard Span
Runner on 3rd: Brian Dozier

Leverage index: 1.2
Win probability added: -2.5%

Here’s a lesson in win probability added for you: when you’re down by four runs in the 6th inning, you shouldn’t trade outs for runs as a rule. The Twins actually lost 2.5 points of win probability on this squeeze. As a straight squeeze play, then it’s a terrible call. Span was definitely bunting for a hit here though, and he lays down a good one, just not good enough.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): +1 (+1, success)

Adam Wainwright Suicide Squeeze Fail / Alcides Escobar Safety Squeeze Fail

Game: Kansas City at St. Louis, June 17 (box, 5-3 Royals win in 14 innings)

The Cards and Royals celebrate Father’s Day with dueling failed squeeze plays in a 14 inning game! Let’s go to the videotape!

Situation: Bottom 5, zero out, 0-1 count, runners at 2nd/3rd, St. Louis down 1-0
Pitcher: Luis Mendoza
Batter: Adam Wainwright
Runner on 3rd: Tyler Greene

Leverage index: 2.2
Win probability added: -18.9%

It’s a tough pitch to bunt, a slider down and a foot outside, and Wainwright can’t make contact. He should have thrown the bat at it.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): -2 (-1, fail; -1, missed bunt)

Situation: Top 11, zero out, 1-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, game tied at 2-2
Pitcher: Victor Marte
Batter: Alcides Escobar
Runner on 3rd: Jeff Francoeur

Leverage index: 2.5
Win probability added: -23.3%

Escobar bunted this one too hard, but most of the credit goes to Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig for getting to the ball quickly and cutting down the go-ahead run. Kudos to the Royals for the gumption to call for the squeeze in extras. All they got for their trouble though was the most costly fail of the season (-23% WPA).

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): -1 (-1, fail)

Mitch Maier Safety Squeeze

Game: Kansas City at Baltimore, May 27 (box, 4-2 Royals win)
Situation: Top 2, one out, 1-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, 1-1 tie
Pitcher: Brian Matusz
Batter: Mitch Maier
Runner on 3rd: Jeff Francoeur

Leverage index: 1.8
Win probability added: +1.9%

You have to feel for KC Royals fans. Their team was a trendy pick to contend in the AL Central but currently sits in fourth place. Their wunderkind first baseman Eric Hosmer is hitting .201/.265/.339. And to top it off they have to listen to Rex Hudler call the games.

At least they can enjoy a pretty safety squeeze once in a while.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): +2 (+1, success; +1, tie game)

John McDonald Safety Squeeze

Game: Arizona at Kansas City, May 20 (box)
Situation: Top 5, zero out, 0-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, tie game
Pitcher: Nathan Adcock
Batter: John McDonald
Runner on 3rd: Paul Goldschmidt

Leverage index: 1.94
Win probability added: 6.6%

Nicely done all around by the Diamondbacks.

Except for Mark Grace. That guy is a terrible commentator.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): +3 (+1, success; +1, batter reaches base; +1, tie game)
