This week in squeeze: July 15 – August 1

Alternatively titled “Where have all the squeeze plays gone?” A Kyle Seager safety against the shift* ended a streak of two weeks of squeezeless baseball.

I can’t believe this doesn’t happen more often.

Brendan Harris Suicide Squeeze Fail

Game: Anaheim at Seattle, 2013/04/27 (box, 3-2 Angels loss)
Situation: Top 4, one out, 0-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, Anaheim ahead 2-0
Pitcher: Felix Hernandez
Batter: Brendan Harris
Runner on 3rd: Mark Trumbo

Leverage index: 1.5
Win probability added: -5.3%

It’s a good bunt, but not good enough as King Felix makes an outstanding play with the glove flip.

Brendan Ryan and Endy Chavez Suicide Squeeze Fail

Game: Seattle vs. Texas, 2013/4/11 (box, Mariners loss 4-3)
Situation: Bottom 8, one out, 1-1 count, runner at 3rd, Seattle down 4-3
Pitcher: Robbie Ross
Batter: Brendan Ryan
Runner on 3rd: Endy Chavez

Leverage index: 4.8
Win probability added: -23.0%

It’s an early contender for worst fail of the season at 23% win probability lost!

Franklin Gutierrez Safety Squeeze

Game: Seattle vs. Houston, 2013/4/8 (box, 3-0 Mariners win)
Situation: Bottom 5, one out, 2-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, Seattle up 2-0
Pitcher: Philip Humber
Batter: Franklin Gutierrez
Runner on 3rd: Dustin Ackley

Leverage index: 1.15
Win probability added: 3.8%

Along with Seattle color guy Mike Blowers, I wonder if Gutierrez did this on his own. It looks like he’s bunting for a hit. Then again, Fangraphs says he’s only got 11 bunt hits out of 625 for his career. In any case, great job by Ackley to read the play and score.

Munenori Kawasaki Safety Squeeze Fail

Game: Seattle at Baltimore, August 8 (box, 9-2 Orioles win)
Situation: Top 2, one out, 0-1 count, runners at 1st/2nd/3rd, Seattle down 2-0
Pitcher: Steve Johnson
Batter: Munenori Kawasaki
Runner on 3rd: Kyle Seager

Leverage index: 2.8
Win probability added: -7.8%

This couldn’t have been a called play. Kawasaki has four bunt hits on the season, which actually represents a statistically significant portion of his offense. Here the play doesn’t work, and it turned out to be the Mariners’ best scoring opportunity of the day.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): -2 (-1, fail; -1, bases loaded)

Sean Rodriguez Failed Safety Squeeze

Game: Seattle at Tampa Bay, May 2 (box, 5-4 Rays win)
Situation: Bottom 6, one out, 1-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, Tampa Bay up 5-4
Pitcher: Erasmo Ramirez
Batter: Sean Rodriguez
Runner on 3rd: Will Rhymes

Leverage index: 1.8
Win probability added: -6.7%

Rodriguez’s bunt is a little too straight at the pitcher, and the Mariners make a nice play to cut down Rhymes at home to keep it a one-run game.

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): -1 (-1, fail)

Chone Figgins Safety Squeeze

Game: Seattle at Oakland, April 6 (box, 7-3 Mariners win)
Situation: Top 6, one out, 1-0 count, runners at 1st/3rd, Seattle up 5-2
Pitcher: Jordan Norberto
Batter: Chone Figgins
Runner on 3rd: Michael Saunders

Leverage index: 0.9
Win probability added: +3.0%

Dandy Squeeze Score (what’s this?): +2 (+1, success; +1, batter reaches base)
